Break the stat into its three parts
Hits are largely under the hitter's own control: contact quality, batted-ball luck, and defensive positioning. Runs require someone behind the hitter to drive them in, or a home run. RBIs require runners on base ahead of them, or again a home run.
Because a home run contributes to all three at once, power hitters have a structurally different distribution in this view than contact hitters — even at similar overall production levels.
Lineup slot is the dominant variable
- Leadoff and second: the most plate appearances, strong run-scoring context, fewer RBI chances early in the game.
- Third through fifth: the most RBI opportunity when the top of the order is getting on base.
- Sixth through ninth: fewer plate appearances over a full game and more dependence on the lineup turning over.
- Slot changes: a one-slot move can quietly change both the plate-appearance count and the surrounding context.
A hypothetical worked example
Hypothetical only — no real player is described. Imagine a hitter who has cleared a two-unit benchmark in six of ten games while batting fourth, then moves to seventh in the order for an unrelated roster reason.
The hitter has not changed, but the research picture has: fewer expected plate appearances, different on-base traffic ahead of them, and a different set of hitters behind them. Reading the ten-game clear rate without noticing the slot change is the single most common mistake in this view.
Team and game context
Because two components depend on teammates, offensive context matters. Whether the opposing starter suppresses on-base traffic, and how quickly the game is likely to reach the bullpen, both shape how much traffic exists around the hitter.
