What to research for a scoreless first inning
- Both starters. Each has to get three outs before a run scores. Look at their and : walks put runners on, strikeouts end threats without a ball in play.
- The top of both lineups. Only the first three batters are sure to hit in the first inning. Their on-base skill matters far more than the rest of the order.
- Park and weather. A hitter-friendly or wind blowing out raises the chance of an early run. See the park and weather guide.
- Small samples. A pitcher's first-inning record over a few starts is a tiny . Season-long walk and strikeout rates are steadier.
