Home run research is the easiest place to fool yourself. Outcomes are rare, streaks look meaningful when they are not, and conditions matter more than in almost any other view. Start with contact quality, not home run counts

Recent home run counts are the noisiest possible summary of a hitter's power. A three-game stretch can contain two home runs and a week of weak contact, or a week of excellent contact and zero results.

The more stable inputs are how hard the hitter is hitting the ball, the launch angles they are producing, and how often they are pulling the ball in the air. Those describe the process that produces home runs, and they change more slowly than the outcomes themselves.

Park geometry is directional

A park is not uniformly friendly or unfriendly. Fence distance and wall height vary by field, so the same park can suppress one hitter's typical spray direction while helping another's.

That is why direction matters more than a single park-factor number. A pull-heavy hitter in a park with a short porch on their pull side is in a different situation than the same hitter in a park where the depth sits on that side.

Air conditions move the margin

  • Temperature: warmer air is less dense, and batted balls generally carry a bit further.
  • Wind direction and speed: sustained wind out to a specific field is more informative than an average wind figure.
  • Humidity and elevation: both change carry, and elevation effects are stable park-to-park rather than day-to-day.
  • Roof status: a closed roof removes wind as a variable entirely, which usually reduces the spread of outcomes.

Opposing pitcher profile

Ground-ball-heavy pitchers structurally limit the number of balls in the air, which is the first requirement for a home run. Fly-ball pitchers allow more chances but not uniformly across handedness.

Hypothetical only: imagine a pull-side power hitter facing a fly-ball starter in a park with a short pull-side fence and a warm evening forecast. Every input points the same direction, and it is still an event that will not happen most nights. That is the correct mental model for this view.
