Parks are asymmetric, not uniformly good or bad
Ballparks differ by field: distance down each line, depth in the gaps, wall height, and foul territory. A single aggregate park number averages all of that away.
The practical consequence is that park context should be read in the direction the hitter actually hits the ball. A pull-heavy hitter cares about the geometry on their pull side; an opposite-field hitter cares about the other one.
What each weather input does
- Temperature: warmer air is less dense and batted balls generally carry slightly further; cold games trim carry.
- Wind: direction matters more than speed alone. Sustained wind out to a specific field is meaningful; a swirling average is not.
- Humidity: affects air density and ball behaviour, usually a smaller effect than temperature or wind.
- Elevation: a stable, park-level effect rather than a day-to-day variable.
- Roof status: a closed roof removes wind entirely and narrows the spread of outcomes.
- Precipitation: relevant mainly for delay and postponement risk, which affects whether a row is gradeable at all.
Foul territory and defence
Large foul territory converts some would-be extra plate appearances into outs, which subtly reduces offensive opportunity across a game. Small foul territory does the opposite.
Defensive quality and positioning also shape outcomes on balls in play, and neither is a park factor. Keeping them separate stops you from crediting the park for something the defence did.
A hypothetical worked example
Hypothetical only — no real player is described. A pull-side power hitter plays a warm evening game in a park with a short pull-side fence and a light breeze blowing out that way. Every environmental input nudges the same direction.
That is a genuine, small tailwind on an already-strong contact profile. It is not a reason to override a poor contact profile, and it does not change the fact that the specific outcome remains uncertain.
